  • Michael Carrick is Manchester United’s new head coach
  • Club legend will sign two-year contract
  • Ruben Amorim faced transfer frustration

Manchester United could announce Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor as early as today when Nottingham Forest visit Old Trafford in the Premier League. Michael Carrick has picked up the pieces of Amorim’s reign of ruin, earning himself the job by guiding United back to the Champions League in his first six months.

Carrick has overseen 10 wins in 15 matches since returning to M16 in January, including eight of nine at home, and just two narrow defeats. He will now have the opportunity to build on the foundations he has already laid out across the summer and beyond.

The summer transfer window he is walking into is one of the most important in the club’s recent history. It will set up Carrick’s tenure for success or failure. And he will inherit benefits that Amorim did not have himself when working with United’s new-look recruitment team under the INEOS banner.

Michael Carrick’s Man Utd contract

Carrick has agreed a two-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months, following negotiations which involved certain demands regarding recruitment.

According to Roundtable, Carrick asked the United hierarchy for assurances about his involvement in future signings. The Red Devils icon reportedly wants a more significant say in new arrivals than his predecessor, Amorim.

Club figures are said to have welcomed the idea and will adopt a more cooperative approach when building Carrick’s squad ahead of his first full season at the helm.

Of course, Amorim sanctioned all signings during his reign as United boss. However, the Portuguese coach also had to settle for arrivals who were not his preferred target.

Ruben Amorim was vetoed

Last summer, United decided to ignore their midfield frailties and focus on an attacking upheaval with a Premier League flavour. Benjamin Sesko followed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo through the door in a £200million-plus overhaul.

However, if Amorim had his own way, United would have pushed for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins instead of Sesko. Decision brokers believed the 22-year-old Slovenian could make an impact this season and for years to come. That belief was not the same about Watkins, who turns 31 this year.

Senne Lammens landed in Manchester late in the window after Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir’s calamitous starts to the season. Amorim is said to have wanted another Villa player in Emi Martinez, who was keen to make the switch.

Again, United prioritised the future and cost, paying just £18m for the 23-year-old Belgian. Lammens, one of the Premier League signings of the season, has proven that approach was the correct one.

Carrick will seemingly have more influence on the upcoming arrivals this summer, but United will ensure any signing makes sense for the club, not just the head coach.
