  • Tyrell Malacia to leave Old Trafford this summer
  • Departure shows difference between INEOS and Glazers
  • Americans once handed Phil Jones a costly new deal for United

In more than one sense, Manchester United‘s end to the season will also spell the end of an era at Old Trafford.

Whilst the regime in charge remains the same, things are expected to look different, come the end of the summer.

Arrivals will dawn in a new-look side in a post-Casemiro world. For others, the game against Brighton & Hove Albion next weekend (24 May) will spell their last game in the matchday squad.

Tyrell Malacia Set to Leave Club

It has been a known secret for some time, but the club officially confirmed that Tyrell Malacia will be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season. The announcement was made public on the club’s website, with a closing statement that read: “Thanks to Ty for all his efforts and the best of luck for the future from everyone at the club.”

Before that, interim boss Michael Carrick gave the defender a shoutout in the traditional end-of-season speech after the 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest. Speaking to the crowd, the 44-year-old said: “There’s Tyrell, who I spoke to the lads about before kick-off. He’s been through a tough period because of injuries. I invite you to show him your affection.”

Carrick spoke about it, but Malacia had a long spell out with injury after an initially impressive start to life in Manchester. He was the first signing of Erik ten Hag, bought from Feyenoord for £12m.

The Dutchman suffered a complicated knee injury in his debut season, which led to him missing 70 games across 500 days out. By the time he returned in December 2024, Ruben Amorim was in charge.

Malacia’s career never got going from that point on. He was part of the infamous ‘bomb squad’ under the Portuguese head coach. Yet, the 26-year-old was the only member who remained at the club due to no takers.

An offer from Turkey did come late in the winter window. However, the move was ultimately blocked as Patrick Dorgu got injured at the same time.

INEOS Make No Mistake with Sentiment

Unlike the Glazers, INEOS seem to have little room for sentiment around. Their logic is very much football-based, as seen with Casemiro, for example. The Brazilian leaves on a high, with the football not having left him, as Jamie Carragher once alluded to.

Yet, reducing his high salary seems like a logical way to reduce costs and replace him with a younger, primed anchor. Those are the sort of moves that will never happen under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

During his 12-year stay at Old Trafford, JPhil ones was awarded two major contract extensions in 2015 and 2019. The latter drew much criticsm from fans, as the money could have been circulated into finding a more readily available centre-back.

For the following four years, the Englishman only made 16 appearances for United. The club wasted roughly £19m on wages for a player they rarely ever saw on the pitch. The deal was played up by Ed Woodward and his team at the time, but ultimately sanctioned by the Glazers.

With Malacia’s departure, fans can rest assured knowing that that type of contract extension will not be seen under INEOS.
