- Manchester United ‘monitoring’ Brazilian midfielder Danilo
- Previously played for Notts Forest
- Direct replacement for Casemiro would not go down well with fans
Replacing Casemiro this summer is arguably the defining challenge of the INEOS era so far at Manchester United.
After an emotional farewell on Sunday (17 May), there is only one more game for the Brazilian to play as a United player. But to plug the massive void left by the legendary midfielder, the Reds might just be looking back to the veteran’s homeland.
Reports out of Brazil suggest the Red Devils are seriously weighing a move to bring a former Premier League star back to England.

Reds ‘Monitoring’ Danilo
According to ESPN Brasil, Manchester United have entered the race to sign Botafogo midfielder Danilo. The midfielder returned to Brazil after his stint at Nottingham Forest between 2023 and 2025.
The 25-year-old is said to be keen to move back to England. He has been in impeccable form this campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing 3 assists in 24 games.
His stellar club form has even earned him a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad for this summer, which is something for Manchester United fans to keep an eye on next month. He will be joining Casemiro and Matheus Cunha on the plane to North America.

Is Danilo a Casemiro Replacement?
Despite showing flashes of brilliance with Nottingham Forest, Danilo’s time in England was ultimately hampered by a broken ankle. Since returning to Brazil, he has completely rediscovered his form at Botafogo. Initially, it was a move he was reluctant to make, given his history with their fierce rivals, Palmeiras.
Yet, he took the chance, and it has paid off for him personally. While Danilo’s contract reportedly includes a £38m release clause, any genuine interest from United would likely see that figure negotiated down.
Admittedly, these links will not generate the same level of excitement as those surrounding Elliot Anderson. However, Danilo remains a solid option. The only real concern is if he is brought in as the sole replacement for Casemiro. Given that United can offer Champions League football this summer, relying entirely on Danilo to fill that void would feel really underwhelming.
If he is signed as a supplementary addition, it makes perfect sense. His prior Premier League experience means his settling-in period would be minimal. Moreover, that aligns with INEOS’ proven preference for recruitment targets who already know the English game.
