  • Manchester United enquire about Julian Ryerson
  • Reds in search of a left-back this summer
  • Dortmund star would be competing against United fullbacks on both flanks

After the midfield solution is solved by INEOS, Manchester United could turn their attention to beefing up the defence.

Rumours have now emerged that United have turned their attention to Germany in order to solve an issue of depth out wide. The club need numbers in bodies ahead of competing in four competitions next season.

As part of defensive outgoings, it has already been announced that Tyrell Malacia will be leaving the club next month. It leaves Luke Shaw as the only senior left-back in the squad, but the right flank could also be an area to improve.

United Enquire About Ryerson

According to a report from Sky Germany journalist Patrick Berger, Manchester United have made formal enquiries about Borussia Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson.

The Norwegian international has enjoyed a strong campaign in the Bundesliga, making 42 appearances under Niko Kovac. However, Berger notes that United’s initial interest advancing into something more ‘concrete’ will be dependent on other moving factors.

Should the Red Devils decide to step up their interest, BVB would demand a fee of at least €30 million to even consider parting ways with the 28-year-old.

Ryerson Interest Sends Message to Dalot and Mazraoui

If INEOS push the button on a deal for Ryerson, it will send a warning message to both Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui. The latter has not seen as much football this season, despite having an important role under Ruben Amorim last year.

Yet, United’s inclusion in Europe should change that in 2026/27 – as long as no other right-backs are brought in. It is hardly an area of priority for the Red, given that both Dalot and Mazraoui are capable of playing in a traditional back four.

The pair offer different skillsets, which make them dependable options for the time being. However, Ryerson is a more athletic fit given his familiarity as a right wing-back for Dortmund this season.

The Norwegian is also capable of playing on the left flank, which makes him an ideal asset that aligns with the current squad’s profile. For United’s current duo, all they can do is keep an eye on whether the squad’s summer overhaul includes the right-back position too.
