Manchester United are reportedly showing an interest in Borussia Dortmund right-back Julian Ryerson who could be Noussair Mazraoui’s replacement. The Norweigan has caught the eye in the Bundesliga this season.

According to Sky Germany, the Reds are eyeing Ryerson and want him to give Diogo Dalot competition at right-back. His potential arrival is said to most likely depend on Mazraoui leaving the club.

Mazraoui has endured a somewhat unconvincing season following an impressive debut campaign. The Moroccan has been handed a bit-part role amid some questionable performances.

Man Utd want Julian Ryerson

The problem United have is that Dortmund aren’t actively looking to sell the Norway international. He has just over two years left on his contract with the German giants.

The Signal Iduna outfit are thought to be asking for more than €30 million to consider selling the 28-year-old. He’s been a key man for Niko Kovac this season, featuring 31 times in the Bundesliga and registering 15 assists.

United do have a strong relationship with Dortmund, stemming from past business between the two clubs. The Red Devils paid £73m for Jadon Sancho in the summer of 2021 and loaned him back to the club in the second half of the 2023-24 season.

Mazraoui’s time up?

There is no suggestion that Dalot will be leaving Old Trafford despite interest in Ryerson. In fact, he’s proven to be one of the most important players in the squad this season.

United haven’t lost a Premier League game the Portuguese full-back has started at right-back. He’s put a dismal past season well and truly behind him.

Mazraoui, meanwhile, has nosedived after making a good impact in his debut campaign. The 28-year-old arrived from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024 for an initial £12.8m.

The Moroccan’s versatility has been useful as he can be used at both right-back and left-back and also in central defence. But he’s started just 10 of 19 league games this season and isn’t a regular starter.

Michael Carrick is set to be confirmed as the permanent head coach and an important summer is on the horizon. While a midfield overhaul is the main focus, there is a need to ensure all areas of his squad have strong depth.
