  • Andre Onana wants Man Utd return
  • Cameroonian spent season on loan at Trabzonspor
  • Turkish club trying to sign him permanently

Andre Onana’s future remains uncertain, but the Manchester United goalkeeper is giving up on his Old Trafford career. He’s spent the season on loan at Trabzonspor after falling out of favour.

The Turkish club have reportedly made an offer to United and Onana to sign the shot-stopper permanently. He’s been Fatih Tekke’s number one this season and is set to feature in his side’s Turkish Cup final against Konyaspor on Friday.

Onana’s United spell hasn’t been pretty and the 30-year-old failed to become the David de Gea replacement the club required. Constant errors were a recurring theme during his time between the sticks.

Man Utd face Onana dilemma

A new report from BBC Sport claims that Onana still plans to return to United this summer. The Cameroonian won’t be participating at the World Cup and could be part of a core of the squad that take part in the first pre-season friendly.

The Red Devils face Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18th, a day before the World Cup final in America. There is a chance he plays that game because Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir both represent their countries.

Onana seems desperate to turn his United career around and while that’s admirable he has little to no chance of succeeding. Lammens has become the undisputed number one and the only way the Cameroonian continues at the club is if he deputises.

Even then, the club surely wouldn’t be too keen on keeping Onana at the club given his purported £120,000 per week wages. He has just over two years left on his contract but doesn’t seem to realise that he isn’t viewed as part of Michael Carrick’s plans.

Bite the bullet

Onana joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for £43.8m. His stock had been high upon his arrival at Old Trafford after helping the Serie A side reach the UEFA Champions League final.

The signing was controversial due to the manner of De Gea’s departure. Erik ten Hag opted to pull the plug on a contract extension for the legendary goalkeeper and instead turned to his former Ajax goalkeeper.

Onana flopped while at United, making 102 appearances, keeping 24 clean sheets and conceding 150 goals. If Carrick wants a new deputy for Lammens, it certainly shouldn’t be the Cameroonian.
