Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian is set to join the Red Devils as Michael Carrick’s first summer acquisition as permanent head coach.

That’s according to Sacha Tavolieri who reports that Ederson is set to sign for United. A €50m deal has been agreed between the two clubs for the player to head to Old Trafford.

Ederson is said to have given the green light to the Reds, and a move now appears close to completion. He’ll likely be the first of several midfield signings as INEOS looks to overhaul Carrick’s team.

Man Utd close in on Ederson

Ederson emerged as a United target a few months ago amid links to Atletico Madrid. The La Liga club were keen but instead swooped for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes.

That paved the way for the Red Devils to move for the Atalanta star, who has a year left on his contract this summer. His signing could face some backlash from fans who aren’t too convinced by the Brazilian.

Ederson has been a mainstay in Raffaele Palladino’s team this season, featuring 41 times across competitions. He has posted three goals and two assists for the Italian outfit.

Man Utd must go bigger

The main talking point regarding the 26-year-old’s anticipated arrival is where he’ll rank among Carrick’s midfield options next season. If he’s a signing to add more depth to the squad and give the new coach more options than it is a decent deal.

If INEOS are putting their faith in Ederson becoming Casemiro’s replacement, they need to think again. Most likely, he’s been signed as a rotational option, ready to help the team handle a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

The main focus now is on ensuring a high-profile and viable Casemiro heir is signed. That won’t be Elliot Anderson, who is clearly headed for Manchester City.

A potential Anderson alternative is Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni who replaced Casemiro at the Santiago Bernabeu. The club are ready to move for him if the player is allowed to leave the La Liga giants.
