- Bruno Fernandes on Man Utd appointing Michael Carrick
- Red Devils skipper pleased with the decision
- Fernandes scored and assisted in Brighton win
Bruno Fernandes has highlighted the ‘important step’ Manchester United have taken by appointing Michael Carrick as permanent head coach. The Red Devils skipper spoke after helping his side beat Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season.
United ran out 3-0 winners against Brighton at the Amex Stadium, and Fernandes inevitably stole the show. He broke the all-time assist record in a single campaign with his 21st to set Patrick Dorgu up for the opener.
Bryan Mbeumo made it two-nil, finishing off a fine move before half-time. Fernandes got himself on the scoresheet with a fabulous finish to secure all three points and end the season with a victory.
“A good sign” – Fernandes on Carrick
Fernandes has been the main man for Carrick’s United and loved life under the English coach. He’s been moved back into his preferred attacking midfield position and it’s reaped rewards.
The 31-year-old was asked about Carrick’s permanent appointment and what it means for the club. He responded:
“Obviously it is a very important step for our club. We need stability in terms of managing and since Michael came to the club, you know how calm he is and the calmness he gives to the team but also in the moments he needs to put pressure on us he does to.”
Carrick has guided United back to the UEFA Champions League where they will be playing amongst Europe’s elite next season. His captain’s comments suggest it’s just another step towards the overall goal of challenging for major trophies.
Fernandes added:
“He knows the club, what it means and what it demands to be at this club we are very excited for what is coming. We finished strong and that’s a good sign for what is coming.”
United fans are just as excited as the skipper, especially after watching the team perform as they did today. While Arsenal have become champions there is an air of expectation that the Red Devils are close to finally returning to its glory days.
Time to back Carrick
Fernandes’ comments should strike a chord with the higher-ups as Carrick’s appointment is a step. The next one is to have a successful summer transfer window and ensure the squad is strong enough to compete at the top of the Premier League table.
A Casemiro replacement is the priority and it must be a world class talent who can fill the void left by the Brazilian. The likes of Elliot Anderson and Aurelien Tchouameni fit the bill.
United finished the season third in the Premier League with 71 points from 38 games. Since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January, the Reds’ form puts them top of the table.
