Sky Sports claim Man Utd first summer signing is close to completion
  • Man Utd close to signing Ederson
  • Atalanta midfielder has agreed personal terms
  • Brazilian could be Michael Carrick’s first signing

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian looks set to be Michael Carrick’s first signing as a permanent head coach.

According to Sky Sports‘ Lyall Thomas, United are close to agreeing a deal with the Serie A club. Talks are in their final stages and a fee of £38m is likely to be paid via add-ons.

Ederson appears to have agreed on personal terms with the Reds and is snubbing approaches from other clubs. A full agreement could be reached by the end of the week.

Man Utd close to signing Ederson

Ederson emerged as a target in recent weeks, and negotiations between the two clubs have commenced. The fact that he is ruling out other options and focusing solely on the move to Old Trafford speaks volumes about his desire to play for the club.

The 26-year-old has been the midfield engine room at Atalanta for several years. He played a crucial role in the Italian outfit’s Europa League triumph in 2023-24.

United are rebuilding their midfield and appear keen to strengthen with the addition of Ederson. He’s not expected to be Casemiro’s direct replacement, and a more marquee signing is anticipated.

The Brazilian has made 41 appearances across competitions this season, posting three goals and two assists. He has been at Gewiss Stadium since the summer of 2022 and has one year left on his contract.

First of three

Ederson should be the first of three new midfielders to join United this summer. He’s a great option for Carrick to rotate his team for their return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

With years of experience in European football, he could prove to be a superb acquisition. There has been some moans and groans from fans regarding the club’s pursuit.

That said, United need more than just one high-profile name to arrive in the middle of the park. There’s every chance that Ederson replaces Manuel Ugarte, whose days at Old Trafford look numbered.

INEOS are overseeing this summer’s transfer business, which bodes well given their success overhauling the frontline last summer. Hopefully, they replicate this with their midfield overhaul, as Carrick must be backed with the right players, even if that means spending heavily.
