- Manchester United turn attention towards Leicester City defender
- 22-year-old stands at 6ft 5″
- Transfer of similar vein to Shea Charles, who has also been linked
2026 will mark 12 years since Manchester United‘s infamous 5-3 loss against Leicester City in the Premier League. Under Louis Van Gaal, the Reds were leading 3-1, only to completely collapse at the King Power Stadium.
It brought questions as to how fragile the team’s defence was. The former Premier League champions have had their own questions over the defence this season, conceding 68 goals in the Championship. More than a decade later, the Foxes’ latest collapse will see them play in League One next season.
It could present Michael Carrick‘s side with an opportunity to whisk away one of their defensive giants.

Nelson Attracts Interest From Manchester
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are assessing Ben Nelson from Leicester. It is the second Football League name the Reds have been linked with in recent weeks. Southampton’s Shea Charles was the first, with the £25m rated startlet expected to move on from the Saints.
The 6ft 5in tall defender is primarily a centre-back, but can also play at left-back. Nelson is well-known for his composure on the ball and maturity. The expectation is that United see the England U21 international as someone who could develop into a valuable long-term option.
Manchester City were also thought to be interested in the young defender since 2022, when he broke through under Enzo Maresca. The former Chelsea boss is expected to take over from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. This could potentially renew interest from the Citizens, as the player was seen as a “big favourite” by Maresca.

Defender Viewed as Squad Option
A move for Nelson would initially see him join as a developmental squad option rather than an immediate starter. In that sense, it fits the modern transfer policy under INEOS. Under the current hierarchy, there is an awareness that the club can’t just buy – and will not buy – superstar names like the regime in the past.
The 22-year-old fits into the same long-term defensive recruitment category as the likes of Ayden Heaven, Chido Obi, and Leny Yoro. However, because Nelson already boasts genuine senior experience under his belt, he would command a higher premium than Heaven and Chido Obi. The pair came from Hale End at Arsenal.
Fortunately for United, Leicester City’s recent relegation could significantly cheapen the price. It may not be the most glamorous signing, but it shows that the hierarchy has its eyes on leagues besides the top flight.
