- Man Utd eyeing William Gomes
- FC Porto winger will cost a hefty fee
- Other clubs circling for Brazilian
Manchester United are reportedly one of several clubs eyeing FC Porto winger William Gomes. The Reds have joined the race for the in-demand Brazilian attacking ace.
According to Brazilian journalist Eduardo Burgos, United are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old who has starred in Liga Portugal this season. He has registered 13 goals and two assists in 46 games across competitions.
United are expected to sign a new winger this summer due to a lack of options out on the left wing. Matheus Cunha is Michael Carrick’s first choice, while Patrick Dorgu is an option, although he started his Old Trafford career at wing-back.
Man Utd eyeing William Gomes
Arsenal, Newcastle United and AS Roma are also thought to be keen on Gomes. He is an exciting young talent who boasts plenty of pace and promise.
A potential deal for the Brazilian is expensive, though, as Porto is demanding a “very high transfer fee.” That or any interested club will have to pay his £70m (€80m) release clause.
No formal offers have been made for the player yet, and the Portuguese giants are in control of the situation. He still has three years left on his contract, having joined the club from Sao Paulo in January 2025.
Gomes does look like a real prospect, and he could excite fans with his captivating playing style. He scored an “amazing” goal against Sporting CP at the start of the 2025-26 campaign.
Far too much money
United’s main priority this summer is addressing Carrick’s midfield, which needs three new signings. Casemiro is departing, and Manuel Ugarte looks to be headed for the exit door.
Spending £70m on a winger is not needed, especially when there are marquee midfielders on the club’s radar. That amount of money should be put towards someone like Aurelien Tchouameni, a world-class player who transforms the Reds’ midfield.
INEOS need to be cautious with their spending and ensure they are signing players who can make an instant impact. They achieved this last summer with all four of their signings, which included spending over £70m on Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
There are also other wingers who have been linked who probably don’t eat away into the club’s budget as much. The likes of Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Mateus Mane could be available for reasonable fees compared to such an astronomical price for a player without Premier League experience.
