- Steve Holland joined Man Utd in January
- Ex-England assistant has helped Michael Carrick
- United fortunately keeping him on
Michael Carrick has been appointed Manchester United head coach, and keeping Steve Holland on his backroom team could be just as important. The former England assistant has also penned a two-year deal with the club.
Holland hadn’t worked with Carrick before joining his coaching team that replaced Ruben Amorim’s in January. Their connection came through the manager’s brother and it’s proven to be an excellent recruitment decision.
The 56-year-old has worked with some of the very greatest tacticians in the game. That includes Jose Mourinho, whom he supported during his triumphant and Premier League title-winning reign at Chelsea.
Carrick ‘lucky’ to have Holland
Whenever broadcast cameras have pointed at Carrick, Holland has tended to be speaking to him on the touchline. He seems to be having a significant influence on the training pitch and working in tandem with United’s permanent head coach.
Holland’s previous job before heading to the club he supported as a child came with England. He assisted Gareth Southgate during a 12-year reign which saw the Three Lions reach two European Championship finals.
Former England coach Allan Russel has given his verdict on Holland and why Carrick is fortunate to have him on board. He told Steven Railston of Manchester Evening News:
“He has an aura about him, he is a genius. The way I work and coach now, 75% of it is because of Steve Holland. The way he works to prepare sessions, to deliver sessions, to debrief sessions. The way he communicates with staff and communicates with players. Michael Carrick is so lucky, and he chose so wisely with Steve.”
Holland is the most experienced member of Carrick’s backroom staff. The likes of Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans are also working alongside the United head coach.
With all their futures sorted out, the Red Devils can build for the future. Holland’s input is massively important because he knows how to win trophies and has experience assisting some of the very best managers to grace the game.
Holland has been a masterstroke
United and Carrick could have settled on the backroom team that the Englishman had in place during his time at Middlesbrough. That includes Travis Binnion, who has also joined him at Old Trafford.
There is always a need for a coaching setup to have a wiseman who has achieved major success. That’s why Holland is probably the most important member of that team other than Carrick.
Mourinho needed him during his first spell in England with Chelsea, and it’s not just with the Blues that he proved his worth. There’s no telling how Southgate’s Three Lions would have fared if not for having him working by his side.
There are similarities between where United are and where England found themselves when Southgate took over. A rebuild had been required which for the national team was to focus on youth rather than the big names and INEOS can take inspiraton from that by building a cohesive squad rather than a star-studded one.
