- Harry Maguire linked with Man Utd exit
- English defender ‘offered’ to European giants
- Maguire signed new one-year deal in April
Manchester United only extended Harry Maguire’s contract in April but he’s already being linked with a summer exit. The English centre-back signed a new one-year deal ahead of his previous one expiring in June.
Maguire has enjoyed one of his best seasons at Old Trafford and was harshly omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup. He’d ideally use the time off to rest ahead of pre-season with Michael Carrick’s Reds.
That might not be the case, though, as the 33-year-old’s future is back in the rumour mill. Reports in Italy suggest he could be off to Serie A.
Maguire off to Italy?
A report from Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport claims that Inter Milan are interested in Maguire. The English defender is said to have been “offered” to the Nerazzurri.
There’s no word on whether that offer is from the player’s camp or the club. He’s just signed a new deal, so it’s a bizarre turn of events if either of them wants to part ways.
Maguire has been a mainstay in the United defence since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in January. He’s made 25 appearances this season, posting two goals and as many assists.
The veteran centre-back joined the club from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 for £80m. That fee makes him the world’s most expensive defender.
Not a chance
This seems extremely far-fetched, and it’s highly unlikely that United or Maguire’s representatives are exploring a potential transfer. The club announced his new contract with an extensive interview and much media promotion.
Maguire told club media:
“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”
United’s sporting director Jason Wilcox also gave his verdict:
“Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.”
Even if Maguire is weighing up a potential exit, it likely won’t be to Inter. The report claims that the Italian giants have chosen Udinese’s Oumar Solet is their new centre-back.
Maguire has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, silencing his critics with hugely important performances. He is one of the most experienced members of Carrick’s squad and another season with the Reds is all but certain.
