Manchester United are insisting Barcelona pay their asking price for Marcus Rashford. The Catalans are trying to negotiate a deal that would see them pay less than the buy option in the two clubs’ loan agreement.

According to Ben Jacobs speaking to The United Stand, Barca have put two proposals to United to sign Rashford. The first is that they pay €20 million with a different structure.

The other option is that they agree to a €30 million deal but they want a season-long loan and for the permanent fee to be triggered by performance-related criteria.

Man Utd play hardball over Rashford

Rashford enjoyed a superb season at Camp Nou, posting 14 goals and as many assists in 49 games across competitions. He is eager to make the move permanent, but the La Liga giants are not willing to pay the €30 million buy option.

United’s response to Barca is that they either pay €30 million now or Rashford doesn’t join them. The Catalans don’t really have a leg to stand on, given they just spent €80 million on Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.

It’s unfair on Rashford, who has more than proved his worth during his time playing under Hansi Flick. But the Reds aren’t the ones to blame if he doesn’t make a permanent switch to Camp Nou.

The asking price is low given the 28-year-old’s status in world football. He’s one of the best forwards when he’s at his best and Flick saw that throughout the season.

Other destinations for Rashford

United likely won’t be short of interest in Rashford if Barca don’t agree to their terms. Reports suggest Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle could all try to swoop for the England international.

The club ideally wouldn’t sell to an English club, especially one that is rivalling them at the top of the Premier League. That could bring Bayern Munich into the picture, given the Bundesliga giants missed out on Gordon to Barca.

Rashford’s United career seems all but over despite being under contract with the club until 2028. He has made 426 appearances for the Red Devils, posting 138 goals and 79 assists.
