Manchester United host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford today (May 17th) and Michael Carrick is expected to officially confirm he’s the club’s permanent head coach. The higher-ups have decided Carrick is the man they want to manage the team for at least the next two years.

Carrick has delivered on INEOS’ challenge of securing Champions League qualification with two games to spare. His side sit third in the Premier League table, three points above fourth-placed Aston Villa.

The Red Devils face a Forest side that have avoided the drop and can now relax, knowing they will be in the top flight next season. This game is arguably more important for the hosts given it will be viewed as the first game Carrick took charge of as permanent coach.

Man Utd vs Nottingham Forest – team news

Manchester United will be without Benjamin Sesko who is nursing a shin injury and missed last Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Sunderland. The only other absentee is Matthijs de Ligt who is out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery due to a back problem.

As for Forest, Vitor Pereira has cast doubts over Morgan Gibbs-White due to a facial injury. Dan Ndoye and Ibrahim Sangare also likely to sit out today’s game.

Ola Aina and Murillo will miss the match due to injuries meaning Pereira is without several key men. But Elliot Anderson is fit and likely to start amid links with United.

Why Manchester United will win

Carrick will want to keep the positive mood going heading into his permanent appointment as head coach. Today will be an emotional one for fans, as Casemiro bids farewell to Old Trafford for the final time.

Casemiro returns from injury after missing the Sunderland draw. He was sorely missed alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park.

United should be too strong for Forest and realistically can produce a statement-making performance. Hopefully, Bruno Fernandes gets at least one assist to reach the all-time assist record in a single Premier League campaign.

Prediction: Man Utd 3-1 Nottingham Forest
