- Bruno Fernandes equals assist record in win against Notts Forest
- Midfielder may have chance to break the tally next weekend
- Post-match comments show his humbleness
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes registered his 20th assist of the Premier League campaign in the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.
As much as the game was billed as a ‘dead rubber’ between the two sides, there was plenty of action and even teary eyes after the game. The final game at Old Trafford in 2025/26 ended in smiles, as the Reds secured third place with one game to spare.
Additionally, Fernandes finally equalled the record jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry at a tally of 20 in one season.

Fernandes Remains Humble in Glory
The Manchester United captain was speaking to broadcasters Sky Sports after the game. He said: “I got to 20 today. Let’s see. We have one more game.”
United next face Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season. After Sunday’s (17 May) surprising 1-0 loss to Leeds United, the Seagulls can no longer qualify for the Champions League. They will however be playing to keep their spot in the Europa League, as things stand.
Speaking on whether he will get the opportunity to break the record next Sunday, the captain said: “The manager decides who will play the next game. I will be very happy to do it. But if I don’t, I am already happy because it is the most assists I have got in the Premier League.”

Harmonic Atmosphere Helps Bruno Thrive
What was most telling was the reaction from the crowd after Fernandes secured his 20th assist. The plaudits didn’t fall on the goalscorer, Bryan Mbuemo, but rather the provider.
Old Trafford rang out in ‘Bruno’ chants as the realisation crept in that the Portuguese was now in the same category as De Bruyne and Henry. Moreover, his teammates were quick to congratulate their captain. It was telling of the harmony amongst the squad, and hwo much they wanted Fernandes to reach this record too.
Personal records are not something that have mattered in recent seasons, mostly due to team performances being below par. However, a recognition of this just shows how far the team have actually come in 2026.
Fernandes’ humble reaction after the game lacked ego in a moment where it would have been excused. Instead, he did not put pressure on his boss Michael Carrick to play him in the next fixture.
The chances are that he will start at the Amex Stadium, given that he deserves to break this record. If he does, it may not be as well received, but the travelling fans in the south coast will definitely have something to cheer as they send the team off home.
